{July 16, 2015} We were very kindly invited to try DonerG for a media tasting! We haven’t had the opportunity to try them out before, and we’ve never really had turkish food, so we were pretty excited! Our host was the sweetest and kept us company during our media tasting. Thank you, DonerG, for having us as your guests!
Kimchi: It was suggested that we have the “shish kebab” for the plate, and the “doner” for the gyro sandwich. A very wise suggestion! The thin strips of meat (as found in doner) are perfect in a pita bread sandwich; reserve the big chunks of meat (shish kebabs) for the plate. Both chicken and beef were very very tender and had good flavor. I think some might be accustomed to an even biggest burst of flavor when it comes to doner kebob, but I thought it was the right amount of flavor and perfect for dipping into the sauces provided. My favorite sauce was the signature DonerG sauce, which was kind of like a Turkish version of [spicy] ketchup.
Kimchi: My favorite was the dolmas! I normally love stuffed grape leaves, but I really did like DonerG’s dolma. Their rice pilaf is really good…so, that stuffed into the dolmas, you just can’t go wrong. They were not too oily and not at all too sour with lemon like other dolmas I’ve had at other locations. We weren’t quite sure how to eat the pickled cabbage (the magenta colored strips as seen in the photo above)…they were quite sour…but after learning that the traditional way is to eat them layered on the pita bread with humus and rice pilaf and a bit of meat…oh boy it was good. It’s a great mix of flavors. If DonerG were to improve anything, I would say the salad dressing is a bit too oily yet still needs more of a “kick” in taste. It felt a little bland to me, but perhaps I should have tried it with the white sauce provided (an experiment for our next trip back!)
Kimchi: It’s quite a filling meal so we were very full, but we wanted to try some of the baklava before we headed home. Crispy, moist, soft, and sweet all at once. Really good! Quite a treat. With dessert around $3 & entrees around $6-12, DonerG is extremely affordable AND still tasty.
The Irvine location also has a very cute patio seating area in the front! With beautiful California weather, it’s a cozy spot to eat your meal. While DonerG is a casual fast food restaurant, the patio really does transform the experience more into a nice sit-down restaurant. It’s a great place for families, couples, and friends.
