Half of cake

Half of cake

I made a yellow cake for my dad’s birthday yesterday. I decided to frost it with buttercream frosting and put strawberries on it since we have a huge box of ’em. I search for a “good” yellow cake from scratch online, and a lot of people kept pointing to this recipe on a forum. I decided to give it a try and it turned out better than I thought, but I’m not sure I’m convinced that it’s the perfect yellow cake from scratch just yet. I’ll make it again and see if it turns out better.

Anyway, the recipe claims it makes 3 cake pans worth of batter for a 3 layer cake, but unless you want very thin layers I think it would fit more like two. I didn’t know this and halved the recipe because I only wanted one thick layer and it turned out to be rather thin (about a 1.5 inch thick?). My mom is pleased with the thin layer though (she’s always worried about everyone getting fat).

Top of cake – my attempt at decorating it

Though the strawberries weren’t particularly sweet, the slightly sour taste from them complimented the cake very well. I also happened to use salted butter rather than unsalted in the buttercream frosting so I wonder if it might end up a bit too sweet with unsalted butter. I had no idea how to decorate it with the strawberries so I kinda went along with it LOL.
